H. Tutorial around using the OBSERV App
Watch here to view a short tutorial on the OBSERV App:
H.1. How to do a skin consult using the OBSERV
Using the OBSERV during a consultation helps the Skin Therapist to establish exactly what SKIN CONCERNS a client has. Based on these concerns the client’s expectations can be managed and given a realistic time frame around the bespoke tailored treatments for the best results. Emailing the complete treatment report or sections of the report to a client helps build a trustworthy, professional relationship and with the recommended homecare given during the consultation the clinic retail sales expand.
1. As the client enters the clinic invite them on a journey beneath their skin with the OBSERV. Explain that this process takes 2 minutes. Thereafter you move with that client to the treatment or assessment area taking the iPad with you. The next therapist attaches a second iPad and collects their clinical visuals in the OBSERV of their client.
2. Once you have collected your clients’ clinical visuals, bring their photo up via the daylight mode and ask them what their 2 main skin concerns are. Draw on that visual as you talk together. Use the OBSERV Quick Reference Guides and the Visual Skin Analysis book that are included with the device. ‘Remember the OBSERV is a communication tool.’ says Margaret Walsh.
3. Based on what your client mentions to you, you can then discuss what treatments are necessary and highlight these. Show your client the visuals that relate to their concerns discussed. Margaret does not recommend you trawl through all the visuals at the first visit as it will be overwhelming and can confuse your client. Share just those light modes that highlight the stated clients’ concerns.
4. You can then save all this information and create a report to be emailed to your client at the end of the session. This must include your suggested retail products that are tagged with the pricing and instructions for home care use.
H.2. How to put client in OBSERV
Make-up, creams and sunscreens will influence the quality of your photos. Therefore, it's mandatory to analyse the skin in its natural condition. Creams, makeup and SPF will mask and reduce the visibility of skin concerns. If the client’s skin is not clean the skin therapist can clean and prepare the clients skin for the analysis 20-30 mins prior. Remove even if it is before the capturing of the clinical visuals and be aware you are removing all oil from the skin.
1. Place the black OBSERV headband on your client, make sure all hair is tucked under the headband, and any earrings are removed. Fluorescent fabrics that are white and hair that is white/chemically foiled/grey will illuminate in the different light modes of the OBSERV. Light, blonde and grey hair and earrings need to be covered with the black headband.
2. Place the OBSERV cape around your client’s neck, this can be used to cover the patients white or fluorescent clothing that can interfere with the light modes’ readings and therefore accuracy. 3. Make sure to sanitise the chin strap between each client, using a disinfectant/sanitising wipe. 4. The lightshade is designed to keep the light out. Clean the lightshade before using according to the hygiene protocol and attach the lightshade to the device with the magnets. Close the fabric properly via magnets under the chin.

- Make sure you have them on a height adjustable saddle chair, and they are sitting with a straight back.- Remove the light shade and explain to your client how to use the chin rest, instructing them to start with facing forward looking into the mirror using the face positioning system. (The small 3 lines need to line up together to ensure the chin is placed correctly, then once the front photos are taken, you will then tap their right shoulder, to indicate the client to pop their hand into the lightshade and roll the chin arm right and twist the chin cup right once. Take the right sided photos, then tap on your clients left shoulder and repeat the same steps rolling the chin arm across to the left-hand side and twisting the cup 2 x to the left and take the left sided photos.
- Attach the light shade and ask the client to then place their head through the lightshade, closing the fabric properly via magnets under the chin. Ask client to place their chin on the chin rest and looking forward into the mirror, make sure the chin rest is facing central, then proceed to take photos as instructed above.
6. To position a client into the OBSERV using the OBSERV stand
